Severe Grease Build-Up and Odor in Lift Station

A Texas City had a lift station that was building up excessive amounts of grease which required weekly pumping. In addition, the lift station was causing odor complaints that required a maintenance worker to record daily odor readings to document compliance. The odor concerns had visibility at the highest level of local government and an immediate solution was critical.

Helix Labs HL-5000 lift station treatment system was deployed in this problem lift station.

November 8, 2007 — Grease-laden lift station was pumped weekly with 1′ of solid grease removed, accompanied by foul odors and citizen complaints.

November 9, 2007 — The station was pumped and dosed with high-potency bacteria, nutrients and other elements. Note the 2′ grease log in bottom left corner from sewer main.

November 19, 2007 — After 10 days (3 days later than when the station would normally need to be pumped), it remained completely grease and odor free. Grease has disappeared.

February 26, 2009 — System has been in place continuously keeping the FOG under control and this station has yet to require pumping. Odor complaints have been eliminated since installation.
